As defined by Transparency International in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) index, corruption is the “abuse of entrusted power for private gain”. Corruption erodes trust, weakens democracy, hampers economic development, and further exacerbates inequality, poverty, social division, and the environmental crisis.

How is the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) method calculated?

Since it is difficult to measure absolute levels of corruption, Transparency International measures the perception of corruption. Since 2012 CPI has considered 13 different surveys and assessments from 12 different institutions, including the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, UK-based Economist Intelligence Unit, African Development Bank, etc.

Based on the above surveys and assessments, each country is ranked on a score of 0 to 100, where 0 is the most corrupt and 100 is the cleanest or least corrupt. The index is ranked from least corrupt (score of 100) to the most corrupt (score of 0).
