Meira Kumar is the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Meira Kumar was elected as the 15th Speaker of the 15th Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2014.

Meira Kumar was born on March 31, 1945, in Bhojpur district in Bihar. Her father was Jagjivan Ram, who served as Deputy Prime Minister from January to July 1979.

Meira Kumar joined Indian Foreign Services in 1973. In 1985, she quit services, joined the Indian National Congress, and entered into politics. She was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) from Bijnor in 1985. She was again elected MP from Karol Bagh in Delhi in the 11th Lok Sabha from 1996-1998 and from same seat in the 12th Lok Sabha from 1998 to 1999. She was elected MP from Sasharam, Bihar in the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004-09 and in the 15th Lok Sabha from 2009-14.

In the 15th Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar was nominated as Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Thus, Meira Kumar is the first woman Speaker of the Lok Sabha.

Meira Kumar also contested the 2017 election for President but lost to Ram Nath Kovind.
