UP PCS Exam Information

Name of Exam UPPSC Combined State/Upper Subordinate Services (Preliminary) Examination
Number of Papers The Exam consist of two papers. Both the papers will be held on the same day.

  • Paper I – General Studies I
  • Paper II – General Studies II. This is popularly known as CSAT or Civil Services Aptitude Test.
Duration of Exam The Exam consist of two papers of two hours each. Both the papers will be held on the same day.

  • Paper I – General Studies I : Two hours (Usually 09:30 am to 11:30 am)
  • Paper II – General Studies II : Two hours (Usually 02:30 pm to 04:30 pm)
Number of Questions
  • Paper I – General Studies I : 150 Questions
  • Paper II – General Studies II : 100 Questions
Maximum Marks Both papers will be of 200 marks each.

  • Paper I – General Studies I : 200 Marks
  • Paper II – General Studies II : 200 Marks
Negative Marking
  • Paper I – General Studies I : Yes
  • Paper II – General Studies II : Yes
  • As per the new UPPSC PCS exam pattern, there will be a 0.33% negative marking for each incorrect answer in both papers.
  • This means that for every 3 wrong answers, an aspirant will lose marks for 1 correct question.
  • Filling multiple circles on the OMR sheet for the same question would be treated as an incorrect answer.
  • There is no negative marking for leaving a question blank.
Cut-off or Qualifying Marks
  • Paper I – General Studies I : Marks from this paper is considered for calculating cut-off marks.
  • Paper II – General Studies II : This is a qualifying paper. An aspirant is required to get 33% marks in this paper. Marks from this paper is not calculated in determining the cut-off marks.
Exam Type The exam is conducted offline and is pen-paper based. The candidate is required to mark the answers in predefined OMR sheets.
Nature of questions
  • Paper I – General Studies I : MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions)
  • Paper II – General Studies II : MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions)

Both papers are objective type MCQs (Multiple Choice Questions). Each question will have four options and the candidate has to select one and only one most appropriate answer amongst these four options.

UP PCS Syllabus in English for Paper I – General Studies-I

Duration: Two hours
Maximum Marks: 200
Total Question: 150
Negative Marking: Yes

The detailed UP PCS Syllabus in English for Prelims for Paper I – General Studies I is given below.

  1. Current events of national and international importance: On Current Events of National and International Importance, candidates will be expected to have knowledge about them.
  2. History of India and Indian National Movement: In History emphasis should be on broad understanding social, economic and political aspects of Indian History. In the Indian National Movement, the candidates are expected to have synoptic view of nature and character of the freedom movement, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence.
  3. India and World geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World: In World Geography only general understanding of the subject will be expected. Questions on the Geography of India will relate to Physical, Social & Economic Geography of India.
  4. Indian Polity and governance – Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues etc.: In Indian Polity, Economic and Culture, questions will test knowledge of country’s political system including Panchayati Raj and Community Development, broad features of Economic policy in India and Indian Culture.
  5. Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.: The candidates will be tested with respect to problems and relationship between Population, Environment and Urbanisation.
  6. General Issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization: General awareness of the subject is expected from candidates.
  7. General Science: Questions on General Science will cover general appreciation and understanding of Science including matters of every day observation and experience, as may be expected of a well educated person, who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.
  8. Note:- Candidates are expected to have general awareness about the above subjects with special reference to Uttar Pradesh.

UP PCS Syllabus in English for Paper II – General Studies-II

The detailed UP PCS Syllabus in English for Prelims for Paper II – General Studies II is given below. Paper II – General Studies II is also known as CSAT paper.

  1. Comprehension.
  2. Interpersonal skills including communication skills.
  3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability.
  4. Decision making and problem solving.
  5. General mental ability.
  6. Elementary Mathematics upto Class X level- Arithmatic, Algebra, Geometry and Statistics.
  7. General English upto Class X level.
  8. General Hindi upto Class X level.

6. Elementary Mathematics (Upto Class X Level):

(1) Arithmetic:

(i) Number systems: Natural Numbers, Integers, Rational and Irrational numbers, Real numbers, Divisors of an Integer, prime Integers, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of integers and their Interrelationship.

(ii) Average

(iii) Ratio and proportion

(iv) Percentage

(v) Profit and Loss

(vi) Simple and Compound Interests

(vii) Work and Time

(viii) Speed, Time and Distance

(2) Algebra :

(i) Factors of polynomials, L.C.M. and H.C.F. of polynomials and their Interrelationship, Remainder theorem, simultaneous linear equations, quadratic equations.

(ii) Set Theory:- Set, null set, subsets and proper subsets of a set, operations (Union, Intersections, difference, symmetric difference) between sets, venn diagram.

(3) Geometry:

(i) Constructions and theorems regarding triangle, rectangle, square, trapezium and circles, their perimeter and area.

(ii) Volume and surface area of sphere, right circular cylinder, right circular Cone and Cube.

(4) Statistics:

(i) Collection of data, Classification of data, frequency, frequency distribution, tabulation, cumulative frequency.

(ii) Representation of data – Bar diagram, Pie chart, histogram, frequency polygon, cumulative frequency curves (ogives).

(iii) Measures of Central tendency: Arithmetic Mean, Median and Mode.
